I like the sound my Merc 165 pre-alpha made. I also like a big block jet with dry stacks (but not when I'm trying to sleep).

Re: What I/O combination sounds best?

When I lived on Lake Okanagan there was a guy who had a 40 foot or so pickle fork. It had a Lycoming helecopter engine in it. Sounded like it - one day I was hanging out on the boat with the wife and some friends and the thing came in ad did a turn at literally 100+ mph. Absolutely full on crazy speed. I saw the boat at the coin op car wash one time and the guy was really nice. I think he was the son of some large sawmill owner or something.
The collector on the exhaust looked like it was about a foot in diameter.

Made the guys with the tunnel ram dry stack jet boats sound like sewing machines.
