What is “Niro Steel”, and why did I just buy so much of it?

IIIIEEEEEE!!!!

My little boat has now just increased it's rebuild cost by 30%!

Anything that comes in direct contact with the water is now “Niro Steel”, everything else is "Stainless Steel".

Was this necessary?

I Googled it, but didn't get any results that made sense. Where did you get this hardware? And why?

I use stainless on everything, but I'm in fresh water. So far it's worked very, very well.

Re: What is “Niro Steel”

I am now (almost) in the refit stage (the fun part) of my boat rebuild, and I was buying new fittings for my (very little) boat, hence the tripling of the boats total worth.

I have seen this stuff in the Internet, Marine Catalogs, & at the two local Marinas.

I needed new stainless steel bolts, screws and related, so I went to a large local building store that has a small but high quality boating section. Almost all of what I needed I found in another section, high quality stainless steel, but not all. In the boating section, where I found the rest of what I needed it was all marked “Niro Steel”, and was much more expensive.

If it helps to nail it down, I am in Germany, and the websites where I have seen it mentioned before, are all commercial salt water ship & yacht builders, but none of these sorces say what “Niro Steel” is or why you should use it over normal stainless.

I asked at the store, but the three men there all said the were not trained in this area, and could not elaborate in detail on the boating merchandise. Apparently their expert is only there two days a week.

I Googleed it also, and all I came up with was that this steel is used in expensive stuff.

Hmm...I believe I'd just go with the stainless stuff and skip this other stuff. Anything labeled "Marine" is always twice the price.

What parts could you not get in stainless out of the non-marine bins? I don't know the German hardware situation, but I'd keep looking for stainless bits.

OK, I've got it. Niro-Peterson is a German firm that makes stainless steel and titanium yacht fittings. The stuff labeled "Niro" steel probably comes from that firm. If it's specialized stuff, you may have few options. For the rest, regular stainless will serve perfectly.

It's a brand name, not a type of steel.

Re: What is “Niro Steel”

LOL!

I now have Nuclear grade AISI 316 stainless steel, with a ferrite content of 4–6% & high nitrogen concentrations, on my 30 year old, 9-10ft, 6hp river boat! :D

Oh well, after we are all long dead and gone, my little boat will still be hanging to the dock.

It is really small and I didn't have to spend that much to add thirty per cent to my budget, but ...

I had played with the idea of using some of the “high tech materials” available here, in the rebuild or future modifications, but I had not planned on it in this area.

I have a few friends in the F1 race scene and on occasion I can get Carbon, Kevlar or strange composites they are throwing out, but Nuclear grade steel was not on the list. It had galvanized steel & brass on it before and it was all turning to crumbling dust, I was just happy to have stainless.

Thanks for the help guys!

It is mostly used in Nuclear power plants here.

The yacht people I think just want to be a little bit better than the rest of us.

In Germany there is no "Happy Middle" in stores. It is either plastic, cheap and from somewhere in Asia, or it is priced like it would be used in the "Space Station". You don't really have the choices available in the States.
