A lot of 2 cycle oils claim to be pre diluted for easy mixing. Some are specifically listed as not diluted.

What are the oils pre-diluted with? Alcohol? I presume the pre dilution does not affect their lubrication abilities.

Another question. Did Mercury make 12 oz oil bottles in the 1970s that were mixed with 6 gal of gas? That would seem to be a ratio higher than 50::1. Did they use SAE 40 oil or something like that to get the correct mixed viscosity?

I've only seen it say a "high-flash solvent" for the diluted.

For years many oils used Stoddard Solvent as a diluent.

It most likely uses Naphtha since it's a major component of gasoline. The MSDS for the "diluted" oil will probably identify it as such.

I can speak for the 60's, and the answer was that Mercury sold the oil in bottles, probably sized for 5 gallon gas tanks since they were pretty common. But most of the boaters would buy the oil in bulk...they would bring in their own gallon jugs, and we would pump them the oil from a 55 gallon drum. I would love to have a dollar for every oil drum that I moved, or opened, or discarded! I would guess that 90% of the 2 cycle oil we sold came from these drums....

Happy boating!

Rocky, Were those standard steel red Merc tanks 5 gal capacity?

That's what I remember...but I could be wrong. Most replacement tanks we sold were plastic, and seemed to be the answer in Miami, where almost all the boating was around salt water. At that time Mercury hadn't marketed even their first 100 hp outboard (I remember the boat shop owner getting his hands on two before the public saw them, for his 22 foot race boat), and most outboards sold were under 65 horsepower. Most boaters got away with a pair of tanks aboard....

Happy boating!
