What is a fuel vapor separator and what does it do? I've been trying to read the service manual for my 2001 FICHT engine to understand a few things. The EMM is cooled with water from the block then out through the WVS. What the heck is that thing?!! Thanks

its not a water vapor separator. It is the fuel vapor separator which has an outside water passage that cools the fuel also. Water flows through the cooling system through the EMM and then through the vapor separator. Again, the fuel and water chambers / passages are separate in the fuel vapor separator.

So it's core function is to cool the fuel so as to prevent 'vapor lock' so to speak? Thanks

NO, core function is NOT to cool the fuel.
It is a judgment call, but I believe I the core function is to placate the EPA. Vapor separators are a part that was added to reduce emissions.
Any vapor in the fuel section of the reservoir gets sucked into the intake thru a small hose coming out the top. It cannot vent to the air.
I guess you can also say that it always provides that liquid fuel is presented to the HP fuel pump.
And lastly, the water flowing around the outer jacket of the vap. separator cools the fuel.

Which is the core function? I believe it is to placate the EPA.
