Re: what is a good protection sealer/finish for oak?
I built a bow pulpit out of white oak last year and so far, so good (2nd season). I used blonde shellac to seal the wood , then finished it in a nice amber-colored spar varnish. Used one coat of sealer and four coats of varnish.

White oak, as opposed to red oak, has very small pores and does not satuarate with water easily. It is a very good, economical marine wood and is quite durable. The USS Constitution (Old Ironsides) is built from white oak timbers, and it's two hundred years old!
