Hello all,

I purcased a used boat without an outboard last summer and have been rebuilding it slowly. The boat is made by a company that is no longer in business (Rainbow Marine). I have tried looking for information on it. All I got was the boat when I purchased it.

It is now time for me to purchase an outboard. I am wondering what the proper size is. Here are some specs:

Open Bow/Modified V
17' Overall Length
75" Beam
1200 lbs. Approximate Dry Weight (Without OB)
80HP is the Max HP on the Capacity Plate

There is a 1991 50HP Force outboard in excellent condition for $1200 that I can purhcase. Would this be enough HP for my boat?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

well 0hp is the maximum so stick to that rule as for the force search the posts on force and make up you rmind they are a high maintenance engine and unless you are inclined to do work take a pass parts are getting harder and harder to find

I would want 65hp or more, preferably the 80 she is rated for. A 50 would probably plane it, but it's not enough engine I don't think.

Bottom line is how fast do you want to go and will you do your motor work? My old Merc 500 (50 hp) will push a similar boat along well at 30-32 mph with just me (290 lbs.)and make 25-30 with me and a buddy and tackle or me and the family. I like older motors cause I can do the maintenance...except for the big stuff. Match your needs with your wants and then your pocketbook and be patient. Meantime, do some research and ride in similar boats with different hp motors. That will help make up your mind.

I'd go with the max 80 hp. Older 80 or 85 horsepower motors are out there. Better to just get the bigger motor, it won't have to work as hard, and you won't say "Jeez, I sure wish I had a bigger motor". I have a 125 horse motor for my 16.5 center console project, the hull is rated for 145 hp. I havn't even been out on the water with it and I am already thinking about that 20 more horsepower I'll wish I had. :D

Ummm Can't remember the forumla but a 17' w/7'5" beam should carry about a 135-140 unless the manfacturer was not sure it could pass coast guard's broken steer full turn test at speed If it's only rated for an 80hp there's a reason  Better to be safe than sorry ;) that being said a 50hp may do fine? but I always want more power :D

Hey,

The beam is actually 75" and 6.25', but I guess that wouldn't change the formula that much for the rating. I double checked the capacity plate and its definitely 80hp.

Thank you for the advice and all of the help. Tomorrow I'm bringing the old boy out of storage. I just got a sweet load rite roller trailer for it. Only $800 at the local dealer. The trailer is road worthy and ready for the long haul.

I will keep searching for the right outboard. I just want something that I can enjoy. I can always buy a bigger outboard.

P.S. Always remember the immortal words of those friendly shark fishermen: "I think we're going to need a bigger boat." :D
