Hey guys i was wanting to put a new system in my boat and was wondering if what i have in mind will sound good and will put off ample sound and quality. Is this the right combination of speakers and amp??

I have a Sony head unit
4- 6.5 JL Audio MX650-CCX-WH
1- 10" JL Audio Mx10IB3-CG-WH
1- M6450 Six Channel Marine Amp

Please let me know what you think. I am new to this and if there is something that i could do better or more cost effective which I know there is I would love to know. I just know i have owned JL Audio stuff in the past and it always had GREAT sound.

Thank You

Everything looks good. 45w per channel to the 4 speakers rated up to 60w, and 150w (assuming you're bridging two channels) for the sub rated up to 175w. Enjoy the system!

JL Audio makes some nice equipment, but is WAY overpriced. Way, way over priced. I would highly recommend the equipment in my signature. You're paying twice as much for an amp that's giving you little more than half the power of a 6 channel MB Quart amp.. http://www.amazon.com/MB-Quart-NAU6...2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1335220621&sr=1-2

Personally, I try and stay away from 5 or 6 channel amps where I'm mixing subwoofer with my coax speakers. You'll be running that amp burning hot. I would go with a good 4 channel amp for the highs and a good 2 channel or mono-block sub amp for the lows. I finally said to heck with it and used a non-marine amp as my bass amp after talking clients out of doing it for years.. and my god.. it's unreal. Class D circuitry is no joke. I fried 2 subwoofers (fried as in smoke coming out of them and the voice coils melting) before finally going with a 3500w Pioneer sub. $200 for 1700w RMS of 1 ohm stable power.. you can't even begin to beat that.

I haven't seen one installed yet in person, but I've heard good things about the JBL marine sub/amp combo.. http://www.amazon.com/JBL-MPS1000-1...3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1335221693&sr=1-3

Where are you mounting the sub? You're not trying to hide it under the seat or anything, right? Have you considered Bazooka tubes? They can fit nicely right up under dashboards and the sound is amazing and especially in that application where the bass frequencies are corner loaded into the sides under the dash.

Make SURE you're using nothing but marine grade power wire. I've also recently been switching to copper clad aluminum speaker wire with great results vs the corrosion factor. http://www.amazon.com/Mediabridge-G...PN0A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335220505&sr=8-1

ou are saying that buying the MB Quart Amp will be better. It is more than half the price. I havent looked into bazooka tubes but what do you recommend. I was going to mount the speaker on the inside of the boat somewhere but a cannon would be ideal to put under the dash if the sound and quailty were good. Thank You for the advice and let me know what you think.

Re: What is a Good Stereo System

I was looking and the Bazooka Amplified MBTA10250D 250 watt looks to be a nice unit. Would this be a good tube and if so should I stick with the MB amp you proposed for running my 6.5 JL Audio speakers? Does that amp have enough power to run a tube without an amp? If so what should I be looking for?
Thank You for the help.

Re: What is a Good Stereo System

The self amplified Bazooka tube is a nice unit, but my reservation with it on a boat is that it's most likely going to be exposed to the elements unless you're stuffing it way up under the dash.. and the amp is not marine grade with a coated circuit board. It's one thing to run a non-marine amp if it's tucked away nicely out of the elements.. but a non-marine out in the open.. you're asking for ruined equipment. I would stay away.

For what you're trying to do, I would run a standard SVC Bazooka tube + the MB Quart 6 channel to power everything. It's really up to you how much money you want to spend along with how serious of a system you're wanting to build. You could always in the future add another pair of speakers, use the 6 channel for all those, then add a dedicated amp for the sub.

I'm typing on my phone, but tomorrow I'll attach a pic of the Bazooka install in my boat. They have a serious upside in a marine environment because of there being no wood involved for the enclosure, they're LOUD due to the porting and they slide up under the dash very nicely which makes the bass resonate perfectly. Bass is very challenging in a boat due to having to build an enclosure and leave the front of the speaker exposed and not having anything to resonate off of like inside of a car. The low frequencies get lost in the wind. Overall, Bazooka tubes are the best option you can get IMHO.

Re: What is a Good Stereo System

As promised, here are a couple of pictures of the 2 x 12" Bazooka tubes installed in my boat:

As you can see, they fit like a glove right under my dash. They come with a set of straps to screw down and secure the tubes with. I got very lucky with the sizing on these.. they literally look like they were made to fit there.

Another word of advice: There is absolutely no difference between the marine and non-marine tubes except for color. I verified this directly with a tech from SAS.. the manufacturer. They charge more for the marine simple because it's "marine".. and we ALL know how that works, right?

In the other pic, you can see how the tube fires directly into the inside of the hull and perfectly corner loads the bass frequencies for optimum sound. They sound literally awesome..

Actually, I have 28 speakers in the boat total. But.. who's counting? :D

At this point, it's just an obsession to see how much I can actually fit.. and to build a perfect listening chamber for music. I.. love.. my.. music.

..it's also a mobile sales tool for my installation business. I sell many, many stereo jobs after people see/hear it while out..

Mark, you need to be careful. You have probably reduced your passenger capacity by 3 because of the weight of all that stereo equipment.:p

Lol.. you know.. I just put in the tweeters this last week and as I was opening up the Amazon box with yet another 100' spool of speaker wire in it.. I thought to myself how many of these suckers I had gone through already. I would be so curious to know how many feet of wire and pounds of copper I have in this boat.

I still think the best stereo in a boat is the one someone cut the power leads off of. :D :D :D

Is that your next form of revenge after the smelly fish in the truck trick? :D
