Re: what is a long shaft
I have an old evinrude that measures 28 inchs from the transom top bracket to the bottom of the motor.
How do you measure a long shaft vs short shaft?
first, find the model number of your motor, and then ask the dealer, or find out online.
otherwise:
what i do is, measure from where the clamp would hang on the transom, to the anti-cavitation plate. seems like "standard" shaft lengths are 15", 20", 25" and a handful of others. i take what i measured, and then compare it to 15", 20" or 25", and then make my best guess, because i'm not sure i've ever measured an EXACT 15" or 20" or whatever. I had a 15" motor that was something like 17", [a 1959 rds21b 35hp super seahorse], and a couple of 20" motors that were something a little more than 20", but close, [a '75 135hp evinrude, and a '75 50hp evinrude].
try the dealer/internet route, and don't lose sleep measuring yourself and trying to make too much sense of what you get.
