Re: What is a nose cone?

The "nose cone" is the frontal area of the prop shaft section on a lower unit. It looks kind of like a torpedo, just above the skeg. It is cast as part of the lower unit. If it is damaged, it can be repaired by most prop or welding shops, however the lower case must be empty before the repair can take place.

Re: What is a nose cone?

anesthes, i can only relay my experiences with a cobra lower unit, it is not hard but you will need some special tools, a gear puller and snap ring pliers for starters, the gear puller i was able to fashion from scrap stock and threaded rod,for the snap ring pliers i modified needle nose pliers.im not familiar with the alpha drives but look for 4 bolts down inside the cavity these must be removed first. a manual is a must on this project, especialy for reassembly.good luck and feel free to email me, mickey1

Re: What is a nose cone?

Hi,

I'm trying to get a new outdrive together after a theft.

Buying another alpha one tonight. The lower unit has a small crack on the side (leaks oil). GOnna weld it first, if that fails I have a spare lower but I don't know the condition of the gears. Figured i'd do a swaparoo.

Thanks for the response!

-- Joe
