Rather than using a fuel pump to suck gasoline out of a tank, early J/E engines used a different method. At each rotation of the engine, the inside of the crankcase is pressurized to force fuel/air into the combustion chamber. Some of this air is bled off via a one way valve (a check valve) and fed to the fuel tank through a hose. This air pressurizes the fuel tank which in turn forces the fuel from the bottom of the tank into the carburetor. The tanks are easily recognised by their two hoses; one for air and one for the returning fuel. The male J/E pressure connector has three prongs while the regular connector only has two.<br /><br />It's a fairly simple matter to turn a pressure tank outboard into a fuel pump one, but generally it's less expensive to purchase and rebuild a pressure tank.

JohnnyRude engines before about 1960 used a pressurized tank instead of a fuel pump.<br /><br />The fuel "line" was double and the connectors were sort of triangular. One line used pressure pulses from the engine crankcase to pressurize the tank and the other line carried fuel under pressure to the carb.<br /><br />If your fuel line is double and there are three "prongs" on the connectors you have a pressurized tank.

ramona, your 54 motor requires a pressure tank. the tank has a pump button on top next to the handle that you press with your thumb. tihs builds up pressure in the tank to supply gas to the engine. there are two hose made together that runs to the engine. once started the engine send pulses of air to the tank to keep the pressure up. thus it requires the 3 prong connector, 1-gas, 2-air,3-holding pin.
