It means they know the boat will leak and they have a drain system in place.

Just kidding....youre exactly right. Any water that gets in the cockpit area will drain.

Reading some boat plans they list a feature as "self bailing" cockpit. Does this mean the floor is higher than the water line so water will drain out?

Mark...with the deck above water you can cut in scupper holes into your transom to bail water! Nothin like it!

Well, that's true if the deck is above water AND it is sealed from the bildge. It is a very desirable configuration. What it allows you to do is use a wash down system to its full benefit. Basically you can wash the boat as you go. Sometimes that is very desirable:

ThomWV, your pic looks like the "after" shot of a Mob Boss who found one of his boys had turned states evidence.
It's been said a picture is worth a thousand words and yours really drives home the point of how messy things can get.

I'm taking my wife fishing with me. I'll never
have to worry about messes. she just will never
allow it on HER boat, lol.

Actually I was just trying to drive home how nice it can be to have a self bailing cockpit. This was an exceptionally messy catch but there is often quite a bit of blood splattered around, particularly if we start Dolphin fishing. They bleed like stuck hogs.

In that picture we had caught a Yellowfin Tuna that went about 50~55 pounds. They had to be returned to post intact and he wouldn't fit in the cooler (120 quart or something like that) so he was hanging out with the body-main in ice.

I don't remember who caught him and who gaffed him but I do recall that he got a bad gaff shot in the gills and so he blead heavily, the most I've ever seen from a Tuna, even by those with their tail quarters cut off by sharks during the catch. The upshot of it is that he was bled so quickly and throughly that later in the evening it was probably the best fish I have ever eaten.

Thom

ThomWV,

What do you mean it had to be returned to port intact?
Is this a fishery regulation?
You can't gut and clean them?

Hi gandnalf,

Congrats on being a MFG owner! A good place to get info specifically to your MFG is www.mfgboats.com. Jim Coffman runs the site and is a wealth of info on these boats. Check out the message forum and don't forget to tell Jim I sent you!

Mark.
