what is an evinrude worth?

Hears the deal i found an Evinrude for sale through a friend. Its a 56 7.5 HP. I'm gonna look at it and if it seems kosher ill try to get it as cheap as possible so my questions are.

1. I'm planning on fixing it and selling it as a project, due to its age will it be a tough sell. I don't want to keep it sitting around forever.I'm kinda a newbie when it comes to buying and selling, but ya gotta start somewhere.

2. what would you pay for it, Assuming it was in OK to good condition. If it runs or not is unknown it has not been touched in 20+ years so lets assume for this sake it doesn't, i will not be able to test to see if it runs before purchasing.

3. what would it sell for after i cleaned it up got it running right, plugs, impeller, carb rebuild, ignition... If needed.

I know I'm probably gonna have money tied up into it, if i sell it and make money great if i break even that's fine to.

Welcome to iboats.

If it runs and has a good pressure tank to go with it, what it might bring depends on where you are. I wouldn't spend more than a couple hundred on it. Your problem is that it won't bring much more after you spend bux on it.

If you are mostly looking for the learning experience that is a good outboard to start with.

At that age the 3-5's seem to have a better resale value than the bigger ones. Like JB said, where you are matters the most.

The pressure tank alone can set you back $50-100 so I would be very careful if that is not in good condition and included. You can check prices for ignition parts and carb kits right here at iboats. The prices are competitive with what you will find online.

The Best you'd get for it, Runnin' 'round here is $250... Tops...

you don't say where you are, but around here the only market for a motor like that would be a collector/restorer. No one would use it for a daily driver. So to get good money for it, it has to be in top shape, mechanically and cosmetically.

I don't see any way you can make money buying, fixing and flipping something like that. If your best day is $250, it won't work. Do it for fun but not money.

And as for investing for the experience, you will have sunk your time into something you won't likely do again. Why not start with some late 70's motors or newer, something you will see again, and something people will buy?

Don't underestimate what it will take to "get it running right" as there are many moving parts, literally and figuratively, that will stump you. Once you get in it, it will be a real tarbaby.

We have been buying and selling small engines for a couple of years now and we no longer touch anything that old except if we personally want it. There is just no profit margin in them. We also used to sell on ebay but no longer do that--too much fuss and bother packing, even though ebay prices tend to be higher than craigslist.

Anyway, an engine like that 25-50 tops unless it is in excellent resale shape already.

another thing to consider when you pick up an old motor to restore or even for parts is whether its bolts are frozen. All it takes is one or two to shut down your plans. And you can't tell by looking; I grabbed a 1965 18 hp for parts that looked clean inside but couldn't get most of the bolts loose. test a few bolts when you are shopping. At least around salt water.
