Is an L-drive an outboard with a separate drive attached to it somehow, or what? How do they compare to other engines as far as how easy they are to work on?

Re: What is an L-drive

Rumour has it, it's a big headache and often a big regret.:D
Seriously tho' it was a 2 stroke outboard type powerhead mounted onto sort of a hybrid lower unit...half outboard half inboard/outboard.
The lower unit was sort a vertical drop down out of a horizontal type hidden transom that could pivot at it transom mount point.
I personally haven't had any experience with them. However they were short lived which makes them a parts sourcing issue. As well, they were not overly bullet proof which, when combined with parts availability issues, doesn't make them the best choice for powering a boat.
On the upside (perhaps because they were 2 stroke?) they are relatively quick out of the hole for their respective hp's compared to the same power i/o boats.:)
Anyhow, I'm no expert on these but that is my understanding of them.

Thanks to all!! You have convinced me NOT to buy it. I have enough headaches around.
