What Is Best Way To Find Water Leak?

I have a 175 v 6 Mercury, outboard, and I'm pretty sure I'm getting water in the #3 cyl on the right side...

What is the best way for a water test and what do I need to look for...

I have another post on this motor and what I have already done...

1. new gaskets on divider plate

2. new head gaskets, one was blown at #2 cyl. left side, it fix #2 cyl.

3. Right side head was warped, and I had it shaved, but I think #3 piston is getting water it still has no fire on it, plug wires are good...

How would check for water leak and would you check anything else that I might have missed?

I've followed your other thread and its my opinion that you've been given all the good advice your gonna get for resolving it at the current level.

The engine had a serious problem and what your seeing at your current level may be just the visible results. Most would have seen the results of the problem your having and just gone directly to a tear down rather than trying to patch it back together like your doing.

My thoughts are that you are dealing with the results of the issue and not the issue itself... Does that make sense?

Probably not what you want to hear.

I think I would try to pin down the water leak for sure before I tore it down. It might be easier and require less special equipment.

I will try the water hose pressure the on tube above the footing to see if the water is coming into the #3 cyl...I hope all it is is just the cyl wall that needs to be replaced....
I'm sure that will be a big job for someone besides me...
I wonder what kind of cost that would be to replace a cyl wall?

I don't want to put to much money into this 1977 motor, I would love to have the money for a Four Stroke motor....Maybe someday...

They check aluminum blocks for cracks with dye. Call one of your local machine shops and ask them if they know the procedure and would be willing to do it on your engine. You just might get lucky and find you have a cracked head instead of a cracked sleeve or block.

The good news is that you have all the makings of a decent engine and the parts you need are usually not as expensive as you think. There is a serious amount of wrenchin to be done but nothing that's beyond that of the average person. Heck, I can do it, so can you!

The crack test is called a dye penitrant test. The part is sprayed with a penetrating dye, allowed to soak it in for awhile. Then wiped clean and sprayed with a developer that will suck the dye out of any imperfection and make it real obvious. It's used to test any metal part or weldment for cracks.
