I just purchased a 1996 Sea Pro 20 foot cutty cabin w/150 merc OB in terrific shape. However it came with a older LoadEaz trailer in need of some repair. While doing some hub bearing, and electrical work on the trailer I noticed the winch strap was frayed and the winch capacity stamped on the winch is only 1800 lbs. The tailor has two solid bunks with nylon slides on each bunk (no rollers). If can get down a ramp that's fairly deep (all four trailer wheels almost submerged) I can float the boat just about all the way onto the bunks. It's shallow ramps that concern me. My question is what size winch and strap should I have to safely drag a 3000 lb boat/engine rig onto the tailor if I'm not able to get into deep enough water on a ramp. Thanks.... Bob

A #1800 winch should get it on the trailer ?safely? but it is going to require a lot of effort to get it there. Doubling that capacity would just about cut that effort in half.

If nothing else, getting older has taught me to work smarter, not harder. A #3200 winch would make life a lot easier. ;)

A winch rated for 1/2 the weight of your boat will be great. You're not winching it up a cliff ;)

The 1800 lb winch is probably fine from a strength viewpoint, but a double gear reduction winch will be a lot easier to work on a steep ramp- Here's one on iboats that comes with the strap:

That one has the advantage that you don't give up speed on a shallow ramp. Use the 4:1 ratio on the shallow ramp, the 12:1 on a steep ramp.

Thanks for the responses and link to the two speed...Rather than put out $15.00 to $20.00 for a new strap, may as well update to a new setup.
