Gelcoat is resin kind of like what your boat is made of.You can bank it and walk on it.It takes loads of abuse and will still polish out.Some 70 and 80s boats will polish out if waxed once in a while.Paint is like on your car,If you run up on something you will scuff it or scratch it.It is easier and cheaper to do.If you want to keep a boat for a life time gel coat.If its for 4 to 5 years paint it.Cost is the most important factor.
