+1 and why i like forums in general.

Most of them, not all, are filled with very helpful people.

Re: What is happening to us

I think most are happy to share their skills and come to others aid. I think it is our psychology somewhere.

I think we have lost the ability to accept help without making it right. For some it is easier just to offer payment than it is to be in "debt".

I did my roof at the cabin a few weeks ago and asked a good friend to help. He could not show, but my neighbor, without asking, showed up with his tools and dug in. He helped me for two weekends putting that roof on. It helped that he knows metal roofing and how to do it. I couldn't help but feel that I was taking him away from what he wanted to do those weekends, but in reality he wanted to help. I bought him dinner and left it at that.

He is one of those guys that just tells you to go in his garage and borrow whatever you want without asking.

I just think to myself, I should be more like him..

In addition to being the right thing to do, there's a legal reason to decline payment. If you help someone for free you're covered by the "good samaritan" law which protects you from liability. If you take payment (even if you didn't request payment) you become liable for any damages resulting from your actions.

Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer.

Thanks for that advice, how much do I owe you and whats your address? :)

First off thanks I was getting to feel like a dinosaur.Well anyway I added to the Karma thing yesterday. I was coming back to the car after getting a pack of cigs to see a kid pull up with his brand new to him boat (still had the 4 sale sign in the windshield) I tell the kid Nice boat and he just beamed telling me it is his first and he is just trying to get her home. I then look at the trailer and yep no plate hehe been there done that he did have the lights working however. I asked him if he would mind a couple of suggestions and he responded "by all means Thank You! with that I removed the 4 sale sign, now a look at me flag and showed him how to raise the lower unit manually into trailing position "older boat and no batt" when I asked how far he was going I found out he was only 20 min.s to the next town I yell over to my wife hey mama we got an escort to do and with that followed the young man to his driveway mainly to keep a cop from getting behind him. Leaving the kid still shaking his head wished him luck and started to drive off turning around I hear whom I guess was his Mom ask "who's that' his answer A gift from above. Damn! that made my day ;)

I dont charge for helping out if I can but I will never help those who are in a jam because they were talking on the cell phone and not paying attention. They dont rate free help

We have helped plenty. One was a Pontoon dead in the water. Loaded with kids and parents. Battery dead. I don't know how long they had been sitting there. They had stopped for a swim and left the radio playing too long. Guess who had some long jumper cables? Feels good to help nice people like that. Their day wasn't ruined

Yes, it's really disheartening. We (speaking as an oldschooler) are dying off and not being replaced in equal numbers. Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of good younguns out there, but mostly it's me, my, mine.

I'm sure the generation before us, and the generation before them, and on and on said the same thing.

Every generation seems to think the next generation is flawed, and selfish.

Re: What is happening to us

I once lent my portable compressor to a nurse in the parking lot of our local hospital. It was late at night and she had a leak in one of her tires. It was more than a slow leak, but not so bad that she couldn't get home, as long as she had the pump, just in case.

She told me to stop by the hospital the next night to get it. I never got it back - 3 trips to her floor resulted in nothing but her hiding from me.

Last I heard, RNs make about 40 bucks an hour. Even if she lost it, broke, it, whatever - how lame is it not to just buy another one and have me pick it up?

Re: What is happening to us

jay merril- maybe she just let someone else borrow it to get home with. just paying it forward..... lol. I do agree with you though, if someone is nice enough to get you out of a jam, then at least have the common courtesy to return the items that was lent to you. Then again if you lend something to someone you dont know or even do know expect not to get that item back.
