What is it?

After repeated efforts to get my 1988 50 HP johnson MOD J50TLCUD fixed for low power at above idle by local mechanic, I started looking at the fuel system and as I followed the inlet fuel line to what I thought was fuel pump, I discovered the male inlet fitting had been previously cracked and some sort of glue had been applied to the flange. The fitting broke off easily. I tried to find information on the pump and in parts list can not find anything that resembles the Pump (if that's what it is) on my motor. Can anyone give me advice on this model's fuel pump? I'd appreciate any help.

Re: What is it?

Your engine is an 1987 model. Does number 4 in the picture look like it? That is a standard fuel pump. You may have the VRO pump on yours like in the second pic...

Thanks High Trim you led me right to the part. It is a VRO pump assy. Part number 174570 and man is it high priced. Is there a way around this particular pump? Is'nt it for the oil/gas mixture system, which I don't use?

Re: What is it?

you can run that motor on premix...i read somewhere on here in another thread that you can replace that vro pump with a regular one...i'm running premix in my vro with the original vro pump w/ that oil line, the oil tank, and the vro alarms disconnected...try doing a search for "vro pump" on here....there are quite a few threads about it

Re: What is it?

you need this pump BRP 438556 or sierra 187382 you need to get the mounting screws, there is a plug in the area behind my pump that you take out should have 2 bolt holes on each side of it.

Re: What is it?

Forgive me but I am very confused as to which pump I should order to replace the VRO fuel pump on my 1987 Johnson 50 HP motor model
J50TLCUD. The shop2.evinrude site you gave me calls for a 0398338 fuel pump assy. While the Iboats johnson motor site calls for Sierea 187382. Can you please help me find the right part number for pump and any other sub parts I might need to swap out this pump? I appreciate you help once again.

the BRP is the Johnson current replacement number. the sierra # is the aftermarket replacement part. your choice if you want a original equipment pump, or an aftermarket pump. 0398338 is an old number superceded by 438556. either one will do the job.
