 I have a question about a vintage evinrude outboard .i was told by the man that gave it to me that it is a 1960's 9.5 hp but i cannot find any info to compare to the motor . the info i have gathered is that the 1960's 9.5hp were called sportwin but the cowling on this motor says fisherman. and those are 6hp motors .the numbers on the shaft are not visible enough to read.if anybody has any info or pics on these type of motors to help me figure this out i would greatly appreciate it . i have pics if it helps ? oh i did notice it looks just like a 1964 18hp but the housing of the pull start is thinner than the one on the 18hp.

there should be a small plate on the transom clamp with a model and serial numbers, either post them or look them up in one of the year model guides on the net or in books, that would give you an exact year. Or go to this site and find the brochure that fits your motor.

the 9.5s are great little motors, good luck with yours.

The appearance of the 6 and 9.5 is very different, bugn. The 9.5 were the "low profile" engines and don't look even a little bit like any other outboard except the Johnson MQ series 9.5s.

I think you probably have a 10 HP from the late 50s or early 60s. I don't remember what E'rude called them, but they were fine engines. They did look a lot like the 18s.

The fisherman's were 5.5's til '64 and 6hp's after. If it looks like the '64 18 then it's probably a '64 5.5. Post a pic or look on the old OMC site as posted or get the model # and post. The 9.5's were very low slung over the transom type engines, they cant be confused with the 5.5's or 6's at all if you see em both.

The 10's were Sportwins. If it's a Fisherman it's a 5.5 or 6.

I agree you can't mistake a 9.5hp for anything else. Also, no other motor cover will fit it so if your cover says "Fisherman" then you probably have a nice little 5.5hp. I hope you paid a 5.5hp price and not a 9.5hp price.
