What is it's purpose?

Does anybody no exactly what purpose the copper serves on the inside of this clutch assembly. I think it?s copper. As you can see in the picture mine looks like it was burned in an area or eroded. I ask because there are a few for sale online and all have similar wear appearance. What really threw me off is that there is one for sale on eBay that is supposed to be new old stock but it has the same marks on it. Either the guy is lying about it being new or it?s inconsequential. I would like to know it?s exact function next to the shift coil to determine whether or not it?s critical to be perfect.

This is mine

As those are WAY obsolete, just gonna have to choose the best looking used one you can find. Good luck.

not sure of the actual use for the part but........the surface looks like galling on a surface of a bearing race.....have seen many bearings that are copper under the hardened surface plating of the race.....

Is the copper transferrence from what rides against this part?

The foward magnetic coil rides against this. Actually I don't know if there is actual contact or not but here is a picture of the surface that faces it.

I don't really understand how the magnetism works here but I can't imagine that the copper surface should be riding against the coil surface. THe copper part is constantly moving as it is the foward gear and the coil ( the unraveled mess above) is stationary.
