1989 Johnson 150,Every time I use the motor it ends up leaking dark black liquid from the bottom of the cowling down the front of the lower unit.I think its gas washing grease out of motor. What do you think? Thanks John

yup, sounds like a carb is leaking, fuel disolving gunk and running down the leg..

if you have a stuck float it may result in leakage at certain RPM where fuel is delivered much faster then its used.. (most of the time) and will overflow.. might be a good time to try squeezing the bulb hard with motor off and see if it stays hard.

I had that problem with my Johnny...

rgds

Frank

If it's black gook, it's "burnt" oil. Most likely eminating from the gasket between the exhaust adapter and the exhaust housing. They tend to blow out when ya rev 'er up without a load, causing exhaust housing detonations.

I would call it black gunk ! How hard is it to change the exhaust housing gasket? And will it harm motor to run with that condition?

You gotta lift the power head off to change the gasket.

Look thru the hole where the steering arm comes thru the lower cowling. You should be able to see the separation line between the adapter and housing. Make sure that's where the gunk is coming from. Sometimes (if the gasket has just gone soft) you can stop it by snugging up the 1/4" mounting bolts in the front. They run up from the bottom. Kinda hard to get to. Don't get too heavy on the wrench! You don't want to strip them or warp the housing, if a piece of the gasket is blown out.

It's up to you, as to running it like it is. You should replace the gasket, if that's what's leaking.
