Hello, I run a '72 Evinrude 125 hp motor on an 18' fiberglass Kona boat. The tag on the mounting bracket indicates RPM 4500-5500. I thought I saw somewhere where someone said it was ok to run up to 6000 RPM. Is this true?\Thanks

I wouldn't do it, frankly. You'll get to keep your outboard longer if you stick to the factory limits.

The closer you are to 6000 WOT the better. Anything under 5500 WOT and your lugging the engine. 2 strokes love to run WOT all day, it won't hurt them, not like 4 strokes. I run all of mine at 5800 constantly every where I go.

Cricket is correct...On todays fuel, 6000 RPM is a good thing.
When the engine was built 33 years ago, our fuel was 500% better than it is today...coking will be considerably less if setup for 5800-6000.
Run fresh 87 octane and a good TC-W3 oil and have fun!

My understanding is that the first real limit is the stock (metal) reeds, which get iffy with sustained cruise above 6500.
