How far is too far when trimming the motor up, at WOT? I know there is a point where the performance doesn't improve, but is it bad to tilt the motor that far? Water temp stays down, as long as i am running full speed. (new impellar going in today to hopefully cool better at medium throttle)

dutch,

There comes a point were you stop trimming for max. rpm and begin trimming for speed.

You may even lose some rpm and gain speed as the prop. settles in with a good bite on the water.

When you are trimming up, run to max. rpm and then trim down watching the speedometer.

Exactly.

When my boat reaches the optimum trim setting it feels like the hull is lifted by the air. Ofcourse it's not ACTUALLY airborn, but the feeeeeling.. :D

it does feel like it's flying,,, and if you hit some wake from another boat the front bounces up a lot more than when at lower speeds, in a rocking motion. and i just got my prop back from the 2nd rehub job, hope to put that back on tonight and see if it will work. this won't have the top end, but should make it more fun with skiers and hole shots.

Re: what is maximum trim?

i have 18' '74 galaxy with 165hp i/o. i have read that it is hard on the u-joints in lower unit to try to lift bow by raising trim out. this is what i have been doing at WOT, but i have had unexplained intermittant noise in lower unit, and im wondering if i am heating up/overworking dry u-joints.(as everything accessible has been lubed on this boat, but i have not pulled lower unit yet to check things out) as always any feedback is appreciated. thanks, dave
