i just got a merc 50, andi was told it is a 82 from the previous owner.. the problem is, there is a serial on the transom mount, and there is another serial on the powerhead on the lower housing.. this one is pop rivited on, and looks like a official enough merc tab.
the serial on the transom mount is 4284202, the serial on the powerhead is 5951833.. these #'s are way different, and as far as i can tell, it is a 75 lower end with a 82 power head.. is this possible? is it uncommon? were the two years completely compatible?
this is all spurred by the fact that i ran it yesterday, and when i got to the river it started right up, a hr later, it wont turn over.. i hear a click, and i am getting 12.8v on the starter side of the selenoid when i turn the ignition, but it wont turn over.. i am guessing i need a new starter?? any good place to get one?? anything else to check?
thanks, jason
