What is my motor???

I just bought a boat with a Johnson outboard. The model number is 140883C, ser. # is J0001192. Can anyone figure out what all this means????? I was told it is a 1978 140hp. Any other info from these numbers? Thanks in advance.

Yes its a 140hp 1978.
I suggest putting in a new waterpump kit

No sorry, but C does mean counter rotation from 1980 on , im unsure if it did pre 1980

140 means horsepower (obviously)
8 means 1978 (you just have to know it doesn't mean 1968)
8 denotes features
3 means long shaft
C doesn't mean anything unless there were mid-year engineering changes. If that happened, it indicates which version you have.
