Im replacing my water pump on my 1982 40hp 2 cycle. The clymer manual says on page 239 in step 3 to "position the pump base on a press. Wipe oil seal OD with Loctite Type A..."

What is mean by wipe oil seal OD? I dont know what its refering to by the term OD. I bought I whole new pump assembly from the Merc. dealer and it already has the oil seal in place and I would hope that it has already been wiped with Loctite and then pressed in. It dosent seem to want to come out. Any thoughts or sugestions?

Red loctite helps keep the seal glued in place. If you don't have any and don't want to buy any, put it in dry. It'll be fine if the bore is clean. I'd advise getting some, though. They sell small tubes of both red and blue loctite fairly cheap. Blue is for fasteners that you want to be able to take apart again. Red is for more permanent fastening. It also works well as a sealant and retaining fluid for seals. OD means Outer Diameter. What they want you do is wipe a thin film of red loctite on the outer rim of the seal. I also wipe a thin film on the housing bore. The key term here is Thin.
