What IS "poly"? Can it strengthen rotted wood?

I know, dumb question....but there is constant talk of "poly" vs. "epoxy" here concerning sealing the floor. I ASSUME it is polyurathane (sp?) and an epoxy that paints on, but actually I'm not sure. I was in West Marine yesterday and noticed the epoxy in paint sized cans is super expensive! I'm sure I can get it cheaped at Home Depot or whatever, but still lots of $$$. Is cost why some use poly?

Also, I planned to thin up the epoxt to penetrate the existing floor left behind to strengthen it - does poly work for this also?

Thanks as always!

Re: What IS

sorry, but nothing strengthens rotten wood. the only solutions is to cut it out, and replace it. the poly use in boats is much different than the polyurethane used on floors in the house.

TMH,

I think you are getting a little confused. It can be confusing if you have not done your reading. Poly-ESTER and Epoxy are types of resins that when used with fiberglass mat or cloth creates fiberglass, which is what you see boats made out of. There are also Poly-Urathanes and Epoxy paints. These are completly different from the resins. Just Google 'resin and fiberglass' you should get more info than you can read.
