I finished off that CitrusStrip and got the Kleer Strip in today. Worked all day on it with that KleerStrip and I may be a third of the way there. Here is a picture. Think I am just going to leave it natural, no paint. Guess I will need to use those 6 cans of self etching primer elswhere. Ed Bell

Re: What is the best Aircraft Paint Stripper out there?

I do know what you are going through. My son bought an older boat that a guy painted everything, and I do mean everything in camouflage paints because he used that rig for duck hunting and not fishing. But my son was able to buy the entire boat motor and trailer for a mere $500 dollars. It had a 35 HP running very well Johnson outboard and foot control trolling motor and trailer all in very nice condition. So my son started working on taking all that paint off that boat and motor and even the trolling motor and after much effort he had a very nice fishing setup that looked like new. But he did have a huge amount of work to get it that way. In fact the guy he bought it from happened to see it after it was refurbished back to new and couldn’t believe it was the same boat he sold. Then he wanted to buy it back from him....didn’t happen though. He has been offered many thousand dollars for it since his restoration efforts. I said all that to say sometimes you have to work those strippers and sand and much elbow work to get things into a better condition and refurbish back to nice again. Stick with your efforts and maybe even reconsider doing your initial repaint job again. It will be your decision but also your trophy as well. You will appreciate it more than anybody else that IS for sure...

Tommays, that is quite some project you have there. You are right about someone slapping on way too much paint. I am going through about 5 different colors and the green and light blue almost seem like they must have been baked on. They are the devil ones. The Kelan Stripp can that you have pictured is not exactly like the one I got (mine is blue) but mine is working fairly well with three or four applicatons.

gm280, thanks for your reply. I am retired with not much to do so this is a good project. Don't know for sure where I am going with it. May buy a motor and putter around a few lakes around here. May even sell it but I am sure with no profit but with some additional tools. I bought a large two handed rivet gun and a new angle grinder not to mention all of the other stuff I have bought. All in all it seems a lot cheaper than my old golf habbit. Ed Bell

Re: What is the best Aircraft Paint Stripper out there?

GT, now that you mention the finished product..........I need some help. I am not going to take all of the paint off of the inside of the boat and will be painting it. I have several cans of white Rustolum Enamel. Do you think that would be a big mistake, painting the inside white? I thought about some type of Rhino paint but I will still be a while getting there. Any suggestions? Ed Bell

Yep White would be good. Check the last link in my signature for some good info on painting your boat "On The Cheap"

Yeah, check out "woody's" paint link...
A light color is usually best for the interior to keep it from getting too hot in the summer...
On using a 'rhino-type' coating, the expensive stuff used on pick up truck beds seems to hold up real well, the less expensive alternatives, don't...although how any of them perform in the Marine environment...? I don't know?

There have been several posters here on the forum that have Rhino Lined their aluminum boats. Mixed Results. Some Love it, some say it peels off after a while. Your boat...Your Choice!!!;)

Re: What is the best Aircraft Paint Stripper out there?

Wood, I checked out your "Paint Your Boat" link. Great information, however; that made it sound more complicated and involved than I was expecting. I was just going to take a spray can and go to work on the inside. Guess I may need to slow down a bit and do a little extra. Unless I just can't get the desired look I want, I am still thinking about just leaving the outside of the boat with the natural aluminum after it is stripped. Would I just be waisting the self etching primer that I have by using it on the inside of the boat since there is a bit of paint on the inside already; or should I put some other type of primer over what's there? Here is a picture of the inside of the boat, at this point with only one piece of the pvc pipe on one side. I also have two fishing chairs that will be going on the aluminum benches. Your help sure is appreciated. Ed Bell

If there's any BARE metal, use the SE primer. Sand All of the inside as smooth as you want with 180 grit and then two coats of Metal Primer. You can use the Rattle Can if you want but if you have a compressor of any size, you can buy a HVLP Gun from Harbor Freight for 20 bucks and get the primer from Tractor Supply.

Re: What is the best Aircraft Paint Stripper out there?

I have a compressor and a couple paint guns and a Tractor Supply 17 miles away. I'll go that route with the primer and than I have several rattle cans of white rustolum that I'll put over the primer. Speaking of a compressor of any size, mine will probably pull any type of paint sprayer. It is a 5 hp with a 21 gallon tank but I have been shopping for a much larger one to pull a little hobby sand blaster. It takes about 13 CFMs and I found out that one, that size, won't come cheap. I may be passing on that pass-time hobby. Thanks again. Ed Bell

Sounds like you were lucky on finding that compressor. Harbor Freight has one the will produce 18 CFM at 90 PSI that list for $1,700.00 but it's on sale for about $1,100.00. It's gas and weighs over 500 lbs. I would like that one but don't know how I would move it. Ed Bell

With one of these, of course...

th

BTW, keep an eye out on Craigslist or ask around auto/body shops, or some industries that may be going out of business or moving/upgrading...might find a real good deal...;)

Re: What is the best Aircraft Paint Stripper out there?

Just today I finished striping 2 coats of paint from the sides of my 16 foot Sea Nymph down to bare skin with just some of the primer coat staining the aluminum. It took me, a buddy, 1 gallon of Klean strip, wire wheel, 3m scrub pad and scrapers along with about 14 hours of hard work. Now the bottom after I find some muscle to help with the flip.

It can be done, keep working on it!

That Helocopter only shows half the problem. I'll need to take the roof off of the garage to set it in there. I ran into a guy Saturday night that owns a muffler shop. He has a large Porter Cable that he wants $800.00 for. I may go take a look at it today.

Watermann, you work quicker than I do. I've not even completed stripping the outside and I have more than 14 hours in mine, but without a buddy. Best I can count, I have 6 coats. One or two may be some primers. It takes about 3 or 4 applications of the KleanStrip and scraping to get to my alluminum. I am not going to take any of the paint off of the inside. Here are a few more pictures. Ed Bell
