The best environmentally friendly war to remove it is with a sanding block and elbow greese

I used both some nasty chemicals, and other methods. I doubt that any of the chemicals are truly environmentally friendly. I found the best method was a wire wheel mounted on an angle grinder, with a light touch, to avoid excessive wear to the aluminum.

I tried some exotic aircraft stripper that was water soluble. Next time I would use the same type of product from Home depot. Paint it on in relatively small areas in the heat then hit it with a pressure washer. You'll know right after using one small jug if you know if you want to go ahead on the whole thing. If your paint is in good shape you can lightly sand it and prime and paint right over. If you go right down to are aluminum it has to be etch/primed first to give the paint something to bite to. I used Interlux zinc chromate, epoxy primer and then paint so it is more steps from bare metal. If you have no dings then you can strip and polish it which looks super cool as well.

If you are in Canada or close to, the best and safest stripper I have found is Home Hardware's Natura Safe Strip.
