I have a chance to pick up 1989 16 ft. Crestliner mirage. I already have a 1981 115 HP Evinrude outboard that I can slap onto this boat. I woould like to know if this is ok or will I have any problems. What is the biggest motor that I can put on this boat?

Howdy.

Have you asked Crestliner? I doubt that it is rated for 115hp.

hp ratings formula
this formula gives a rating of 102 hp givinbg that your transom is 6 feet wide... i would be concerned with the weight also.. seems a lil big

Look for the rated h.p. tag on your boat.I have a 16' aquastar ski boat the boat is approx. 6' wide. The plate suggests 85 h.p.However,I have replaced it with a 115 L6 merc.Which is the same motor as the merc 90 L6 & 150 hp L6.I have had no problems at all.I would'nt worry about it myself.

Is that really it? L x W x 2 - 90 = hp rating? So my 14 foot aluminum with it's 6' transom would be rated at 78 hp?! I know a motor that big would be way too heavy to say the least and the actual rating plate only says 35 anyway. I always figured there was more to it than that. Such as hull material and construction style or whatever.

oregonducker
You should make that question in a seperate post as not to distract djmomentum2003 question.
And I only say that because it's a VERY GOOD question. How do you compare a 14ft car topper with a 6 foot beam weighing in at 80-150 pounds to another with the same deminsions that clocks in at 400 pounds with a 26 inch transom and 30 inch free board.. make the post and I'll follow it to learn

Link

Women ignore me . . . Fish laugh at me.
I thought that was line LOL at least I get to cast alot :)
