Some one made a referance to "commercial" when refering to an outboard motor. What does that mean?

It can depend greatly on what you are looking at but basically the com. version of an engine is the bare bones version with no nicetys like powertilt, oil injection, etc. They can also come with beefier gearcases and added stock fuel filtration.

I own a 1992 Johnson commercial outboard - 100 hp. It is basically a v4 with a v6 lower unit. It has power trim and tilt as well as vro. It was set up to run at high rpm for extended periods of time and so it has surface gapped sparkplugs.

Also, since I was not using the motor in a commercial application I got the standard consumer warranty when I purchased the motor new.

good issue. The commercial warranty may be the same as the non-commercial model, but the regular warranty on the latter might be voided if the motor is used commercially (not so with the model with the commercial designation).

just guessing.

A 65 Johnson Commercial has these differences over a 70 "Domestic" version.

Both use the same gear case, block and and innards. Otherwise the commercial has these features...
Chromed water pump housing for longer lasting impellers. More splines on the drive shaft to prevent stripping from fast gear changes. Low compression heads so the engine can run down to 67 octane. No VRO (omc did NOT produce commercial outboards with VRO) If you have VRO on one it was added after it left the factory.

Thus, the commercial 65 is basically a 70 with low compression heads.

I think they also came with a few more zinc anodes for corrosion inhibiting since they were intended for extended use.
