What is the max weight capacity?

All that i have researched just takes me back to the max HP rating a hull should have. What i would like to know is what the weight capacity would be of a hull instead of HP rating?

I just bought a 87 Glasstream 15'3" hull. I have a good motor on another boat, but the transom is rotten alone with a few other areas that need attention. I do believe i am over the HP rating, although i'm not real sure which Glasstream it is. I have a 98 model Mariner 115. I'm not planning on making a race boat, so not going to run it at WOT. But i do want to make sure i'm not over weight for the hull. What i've researched shows 800lbs max weight. But is that with engine and all? Or is that after engine is on hull?

The Mariner weighs approximately 384lbs from what i've read.

Thanks,

Eric

Yep Max weight capacity would normally be gear fuel and passengers. But can also include the motor depending on how its written.

The SHORT answer to your question is sell the big motor and buy the right one for your boat.

The single WORST place to add weight to a boat is the back and even if nothing bad happens you stand a fair chance of having a tail heavy pig of a boat.

The Max weight rating of the boat is "the weight of persons and gear added to the boat."
That is calculated with the biggest HP rated engine installed.
So say your boat has a max of 200HP and 1000lbs of persons and gear. Then you can put 1000lbs on the boat total. Now if you have a lighter engine, then you can still only add 1000lbs of persons and gear.

Some quick and dirty math for you,

Max HP of the OB. Boat length times transom width, multiply times 2 then subtract 90. Round to nearest multiple of 5. This assumes a 19" transom height.
Example:
Length, 16'4"
Transom width, 5'2"
16.33*5.17=84.4261
Round to 84
84*2-90=78
Round to nearest 5 is 80. Therefore the max HP for this boat is 80hp.

This info and more is available in the Safety Standards for Backyard Boat Builders book from the Coast Guard. You can google it.

I think i prematurely bought this other hull for this motor. The more i think about it, the more i think i may just dig into the hull i have the motor on and do some repairs myself since i have all i need for it to run and be right. Decisions decisions...

I learn something new every day. I didn't know about that info. I will definitely check that out. Thanks

I'm pretty sure the capacity plate lists the maximum weight of 'stuff' that would be added after the hull leaves the manufacturing plant. ... :)

be careful. some capacity plates do not calculate out the motor weight; some give the options.

Also the flaw in the formula is that it does not take into account the hull design. Length is only one factor in what a boat might carry. For example, I have a 17' rated for 4 people and a 19' rated for 10 people but I can't fit the extra 6 people in the last 2 feet of the boat! So just keep in mind that the formula is a general starting point, not what is right for a particular boat.

There is also a speed/control/safety factor on HP ratings; you can put more HP on a boat with a steering wheel than the same boat with a tiller.
