What is the most likely size and model of this SC?

Hi folks... I've got a weird request for the Starmada:

My dad recently asked me if I wanted to have his runabout boat. He doesn't use it and wants to get rid of it. He said it's easier just to give it to me than it is to sell it. I'm certainly not going to question that logic :D.

I'm not a boat fanatic, so my knowledge does not even approach anyone else's on this board. Anyway, a few things that he told me do not seem to match up with what I've researched, and I was wondering if the knowledgeable folks here could set me straight (I have not taken the boat yet and I do not have pictures).

What he told me:

It's a 1970 Starcraft 14' closed-bow fiberglass runabout (he gave me no specific model name). It's only rated for 60hp, but he put a 75hp outboard motor on it. Seats 6. From the propeller to trailer-ball on the trailer he measured 19'.

What I'm thinking:

- In 1970, a closed-bow runabout is probably a Holiday?
- 14' seems to be too small? I could not find any record online (including this forum) of a 1970 Starcraft 14' boat that was not a fishing boat.
- In addition to the above, the measurement of 19' profile while on the trailer makes it seem like it's more likely 16' or 18'?
- Does 1970 even sound like the right year for a fiberglass hull? http://www.iboats.com/Starcraft_Marine__1970/bp/54br1466y says probably not.

Are my assumptions incorrect:confused: Any input from you Starcraft historians and sleuths would be valued. Obviously I'm going to be getting this information eventually, but he won't be able to go out and measure it/find the registration card for a week or so.

Thanks!

The starcraft gang will help you out on the boat info.

You really need to trade motors to avoid all kind of problems. Insurance. safety, legal liability and licensing.

Welcome to the site Roasty, great place for info on old boats.:)

Is it fiberglass or aluminum? If it's a 14' rig rated for 60hp it sounds like a glass hull to me.

The Holiday was built in 14-22' lengths in various years. Check out the link in my signature for the brochures thread. Lots of specs and info to help you figure out what exactly you have there.

Is there a data plate on the boat? That would have some info on the model perhaps.

6 people sounds high for a 14' too. Might be a 15 or 16. We need a pic.

I just added that info to my original post - I realized it might be very relevant. It's a fiberglass hull. Unfortunately, I don't have access to the data plate, as the boat is a few hours away.

Roasty, welcome!!!

#1 We need a few photos, even one will do, and we can give ya a whole lot more info:D

I'd agree that the numbers just don't match up. 14 footer with a capacity of 6? Nah.

14 footer with a 75hp OB? AAAAAhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!:eek: Nah, prolly not right either.

Likely you have a 16 footer there, maybe a Holiday.

Tell ya what, if it's aluminum, great! If it's a Starcraft, even better;)

Cheers!

Edit: My buds posted up while I was on the phone. Glasser, oh man, yellow light.

He did tell me that it is a fiberglass Starcraft. I just don't see any fiberglass Starcraft runabouts from 1970 so I think he's got the year wrong too.

As soon as I get a photo, I will post it up. I know that will answer a lot.

If I'm remembering correctly, this DOES look an awful lot like the boat:

Well, my yellow light for ya is for good reason.

See, a 30 to 40 year old fiberglass boat might be ok. But, chances are very good that it would need all sorts of attention (read: time and money, a lot of both) to make it sea worthy. I could be wrong though. Photos will help a lot.

When you do go check it out, take a screw driver a jab it all around in the deck and transom (get the corners where water likes to hide and hang out).

That would explain all the love for old

around here.

I hope it's fine. I'm thoroughly unqualified to work on fiberglass.

Hey! Absolutely nothing wrong with old FIBERGLASS Starcraft boats!! They deserve to be preserved just as much as the lummies!

That said, Starcraft made many glassers back in the day, going back into the 1960s. The hull design on my Americans dates to the late 1960s, and they did make a 14-footer called the V-140 at that point. Cypress Gardens had a whole fleet of 'em! The V-series evolved into the American series in the early 1970s. They also had some lapstrake looking hulls from the early 1960s that carried over into the early 1970s, too. Lots of old brochures for them at fiberglassics.com.

Good luck! Post some pics!!

Holidays were all aluminum boats. Sounds like you've got a 15' Bahama maybe?? Can't wait to see pictures.

Chinewalkers right don't shy away from the glass. Lots of history in your boat being in the family and all. Preserve it, love it, restore it. We can help or get you the help.

Good luck and welcome,

Don

Jason, I am ashamed of you for treating glass boats like that. Now who would just want to get one of those and just take a sawzall and what not to it just to get some parts:D.

Yah, but they are worth their weight in gold!:)

I wonder what kind of value rotted out fiberglass brings from the scrapper? Oh ya, never mind:rolleyes:

I am pretty sure that ez is prepping to give us a time out CW, as this here thread has been totally hijacked!
