Guys,
Back in March I took a pretty good running 1998 force motor to be serviced at a shop recommended by a guy in my club. According to the work order, they replaced the reeds and gasket and rebuilt the fuel pump with a new diaphram kit. It seemed to crank fine while in the tank at their shop, but idled a little hard. The first time I took her out, she started fine, but once I put her in gear to run up the lake she immediately bogged down and cut off. It did this the remainder of the day. I noticed that no matter how many times I primed the ball, it would not get hard, so I replaced all fuel lines to include the primer ball. I also replaced the inline fuel filter and the carb needle. I was able to achieve some firmness, but when the motor runs, if seems to loose fuel pressure. I inspected the motor and found that they left a screw out on the plate that the card screws into. Forgot to mention that I also cleaned the carb. Could this be the source of my fuel or pressure issue? Thanks for listening. Hooah!

I do not believe that missing bolt can cause loss of fuel pressure. Most likely causes of fuel pressure is mostly by leaky fuel diaphragm, faulty check valves on primer valve, blockage in the fuel suction lines, loss of vent in the fuel tank. If you have an extra external tank switch to that tank but make sure you have the tank vent open when in use.

This will eliminate the problem source for tank vent and suction blockage. If it runs fine with external tank, investigate the suction lines and tanks vents. If the problem persists with external tanks, most likely cause is the fuel pump. With this shop missing a bolt on the carb adapter, I would double check the fuel diaphragm. Remember the primer bulb only gets firm but not too firm you cannot depress it anymore.

Looks like the bolt missing is supposed to hold the intake manifold on.
They need to put that back in, to seal the manifold to the crankcase.
As it is now, it will allow air to be sucked in, upsetting the fuel/air mixture, and causing all kinds of problems.

It shouldn't effect fuel pressure going to the carb though.


After they replace the bolt, they should check for leaks with the engine running.

Easiest way is to start the engine and set it to a fast idle.
Then take a spray can of starting fluid and spray it around the gasket and bolts.
If there is a leak, it will suck in the fluid and the engine rpm's will increase.

Carb flange adaptor.(thats what the part is called)
That missing bolt could suck air and make the motor run crappy.
If the ball won't pump up and it's a good ball.
Then they put the pump back together wrong!!!
It would make it run crappy too.Sucking air etc.

Why did they replace the reeds on a good running motor??
Where are the old parts??
Sounds like they were doing un-necessary work.

Once the motor is running the bulb won't stay hard.
It's only job is to push fuel to the carb for inital startup.

I'd look for another shop.
Sounds like they aren't as good as your buddy says????

I'd take it back.Talk to them and see their reaction.
If they say it was fine when it left there and don't offer to help.
Go someplace else and get it fixed right.
Then take them to court and get your money back.

Thanks for the replies Guys. I called the shop and they told me to bring it back, so I'll be taking it back for them. The reason I took it up there is I wanted them to look it over and let me know if there is anything I needed to be aware of. The shop claims that the motor was running a little flat and that's why they replaced the reeds. There more I think about the way they messed up the motor and the $587 I paid them, the more I get pee'd off. I do have what is supposed to be the old reeds. Maybe I need to inspect them myself.

This is the most likely cause and the problem is that the Sierra rebuild kit comes with both the rubber and the plastic check valves. The Merc kit only comes with the plastic ones because that is the field change that makes them compatable with E-10 gas. They also may have not gotten the pins set correctly in the check valves and that can also happen when you try to put both styles on at once.

P.S. Pretty much a rookie move by the way.
