what is the pee hole?

On our 1957 35hp Johnson Seahorse ( that we are determined to get running now) where is the hole the water is supposed to come out when you have it running and would water come out of this even when test staring it in a garbage can full of water? Is it better to use those black cover things and a garden hose when testing it?

Re: what is the pee hole?

That's a great outboard, but it doesn't have a telltale (pee hole) like the later models. About halfway down the leg, there is a hole or holes, where a spray of water and exhaust should appear when the engine's running. Yours does not have a thermostat, so whenever the engine is running, you should see water and exhaust coming out there.

As for the muffs and the garden hose, they used to make one that fits your outboard, but the ones sold today won't work. Instead, you need to immerse the leg in a barrel of water, while mounted on the transom or a stand, deep enough to cover the lower unit about six inches above the horizontal anti-ventilation plate above the prop. Water must be above the water pump level, since these outboards will not suck water from lower than that.

Re: what is the pee hole?

You could actually make a flushing adapter, I just made one for my 5.5HP Johnson today. I just took a piece of aluminum and took the plate off of the foot and used it as a template for the bolt holes and size of the plate. As for the water hole I used a brass fitting and drilled the hole just so where the fitting would screw on to the aluminum plate. Now all I half to do is take a garden hose and a hose clamp and tighten it down on to the flushing device. I may make a couple to fit my 1957 35hp Johnson and Evinrude motors also.

Here is some pics.

Yes it does leak but not much, but the lower unit can't handle all of the pressure going to it so the water has to go somewhere.

Old motors need flushing to at times :D. It was simple for me to make this especially sense I had the parts on hand.

Re: what is the pee hole?

yes but the water is not going thru the impeller, that is an overflow from the impeller. it needs to connect to the pickup tube, under the exhaust, and above the prop.

You must be in a salt area as I never flush... Only test occasionally.

TD, Just asking but doesn't the water have to go through the impeller to get to the powerhead from there? I thought he would just have a lot of extra water going out the pickup above the prop but that plate was an auxillary port for water intake. It even has a couple of tiny holes in the plate to scoop water I thought. Am I mistaken? I was thinking the manual on my 18hp actually said that plate needed to be off when running in a barrel so the pump would get plenty of water.
Just curious, I've always used a barrel but would consider making one of those adapters like manimal so I wouldn't get crud on my freshly painted oldies if it worked good.:)

Yes that little plate at least on my little 5.5hp does have scoop holes on it where it looks like it would need to be faced a certain way. I don't live near salt water.

I'll say this much the flushing adapter that I made does work and did keep the motor cooled from what I've seen so far. If you decide to make one you may want to adapt another fitting in place of the brass fitting like I have on mine or adapt something to that brass fitting to screw the water hose on to. So far I'm just using a hose clamp on mine.

Doesn't the title of this thread sound a little goofy????:D
The water exits the 18 hp fastwin just like on this '57 18 johnson or this '53 10hp johnson. I circled the water where it exits the exhaust port on the midsection. Post a pic when you finish your trusty 18! My '58 18 fastwin could be my favorite motor!

Re: what is the pee hole?

I can't help but to mention this. I was talking to the old retired boat repair man today and he said "yes the side plate is where it picks up the water". I told him what I made for my motor.

I also recall the blowing through the holes and feeling the air come out the side plate hole as I was blowing down through the impeller housing bottom plate hole.
