I think it is just an easy way to designate those classes of motor that don't have any extra's like T&T

Dont forget the 112.

It started out as a marketing deal. Less frills = less money. No oil injection, pt/t was an option no/less stainless etc.

Basically the same as the "rounded up" hp's.

Good luck!

I believe that this designation was primarily to clearly mark them as pre-mix motors, so they wouldn't be burned up from lack of oil by someone who wasn't familiar with the motor. They were promoted as a "commercial" motor by OMC.

Nathan
I belive all the motor you gave do not have thru hub exhaust and were sold commerical work motors, used to push a small barge or work boat.

They do have thru hub exhaust, my neighbor has any 88. These were the spl (special) models. I am not sure hy they have the 8s.

I have always heard they were overbores from smaller sizes motors done right at the factory They always have castings that need to be bored bigger in every production run. EG: 25 = 28 80 = 88 so on. I remember reading this either on a Johnson/Evinrude site or a listing for parts that said this.It was a remark that said these SPL can never be rebored, do to the fact the are factory bores.
steve

^

I have a '96 112SPL I was planning to bore, curious whether this is true about the SPLs being factory overbores.

Definately not!!!! They are standard and can go over as far as they make pistons for. For example the 88 and 112 can go to .064 over for Wiseco.

Good luck!

Thanks. I realize I could always invest in a bore gauge (should).

The SPL's were identical to their even hp. brethren except they did not have trim and tilt (some) and oil injection. The also recieved a different paint and decal treatment.
