There is no "number". Most gasoline engines will run if compression is over 60 psig. Usually, with larger motors one expects ~ 90 to 150 psig and readings should not vary more than ~ 10% between cylinders.<br /><br />Shop manuals do not normally specify any reading.

Expect similar numbers with small outboards as well.Did some searches on 2 to 5 hp outboards and 100 to 120 psi is typical in a healthy motor.As Wildeone points out there is no specific compression figure but rather an acceptable range.
