Okay so I'm thinking more and more about it and I think considering money and space etc. I should try and find a decent 16 or 17 ft closed now and not venture off the shoreline or out of the bay. What about a little guy like this. How much to have a new tongue welded? Is this just asking for problems. Keep in mind I am not afraid of a project :)

It does not look like anyone has been screwing mounts etc into the transom so that may be solid,needs to be checked.Then you have to bounce around a little on the floor and see if there are any weak spots.Go for a sea trial to make sure the motor runs under a load.If possible check compression.Trailer can be welded with some support plates ,no big deal.For 1500 maybe less it will be a relatively inexpensive learning curve.If you decide in year or so you want to go bigger you should be able to sell it in spring for what you paid,maybe a little more.I am sure a few will say just wait for a 18' and be done with it.It's all up to YOU,as it is your money...............

first thought...very rusty trailer..won't last long until something..spring/axle/frame.. breaks, quite possibly when you're doing the speed limit on the highway...apparently not a good thing to have happen,

although..l have towed worse ones than that....( son's )

trailer is NOT in good shape... if tongue is rusted out so is the rest of the trailer... they rust from the inside out.... "seat needs bolted down" PROBABLY means the floor is rotted out and the screws pulled out.... maybe not but expect it and look for it. He bought it years ago needing work and makes no mention of actually doing any. While he doesn't say so, it sounds like it has no title and "the insurance dude" saying it can be registered easily doesn't ease my mind at all.... find out for sure BEFORE you buy it..... DO NOT post up here next week with the "How can I get a title for my boat" question we see so often. If you do I promise I WILL shake my finger at you!:eek:

Last BIG RED FLAG is that the tongue has no jack and it is sitting in the yard uncovered with the tongue on the ground..... full of water no doubt..... again, expect rot

Unless I found out I was wrong on ALL points (which I could be) I would offer what I figured the engine was worth as I expect that the hull and trailer are trash

how about a 17-20ish ft bayliner cuddy, i can store up to 17 feet beside my house but i think i can get away if NEEDed storing it at work in the winter for more or less free (outdoors tho..), this price looks hard to beat but one of these boats is in the states, and im in canada, opinions wanted thanks! price of the second one is a little higher than where im looking but who knows what some sellers will really take, and just here for visual reference

If I'm reading that Bayliner in post #26 right ... that's an "L" drive. I don't know nuthin' about them except I haven't heard anything less than "run away." UNLESS, you're buying it for the "no seriously, I've got one in the garage" effect.

The previous Bayliner (80's model for $1,500) looked like one I'd want to see personally to see what kind of shape it's really in. It's worth a look anyway.

I'd look at a tinny. Maybe like a SC islander. Easy to work on from what ive read.. generally a bit cheaper...

I fish in these waters.

Its very common to go out in an 18' boat and fish this area, even on the West side of Vancouver Island if you are in protected waters or on a nice day.

1 You don't want a center console around here.

2 All fishing boats here have kickers

3 Most boats will have rotten wood

Common local Older boats that may be worth looking at. You will frequently find these boats completely rebuilt and set up to fish with many extras for not much money, at least not nearly what it cost them get it in the current condition.

lol......but in his defence......the prices here are far higher than what you guys pay in the states......it is common to go to the states and buy a boat for up here.

case in point. my 90 b-liner......needed a total resto.....and a gumball berrin :eek: i bought out of vegas for 1700......fixed it...used it 3 seasons......and sold it for 7800.

we cant touch a good 12 foot tinny with a 9.9 for under 1500.

however......there are older glass boats in the 15-17 foot range with 50's or 60 hp. in the 1500 range

It is damn tough to find a beauty queen here for less thAn a million bucks. My concern is that I find one in winter but ( and I don't blame him) the guy laughs when I ask for a sea trial..

Jeff, in case you didn't catch on, my last post here went into great detail about why I would be wary of a boat..... The REASON was less to judge that particular boat and more to educate you on how to judge one...... You need to assess these boats yourself to some degree. After you run them through your filter check em out in person and then run em through OUR filter before buying.

Nobody will let you just test drive their winterized I/O boat in the winter but show them the stack of hundreds, hand them one of em, and explain that you'll hand them the rest after a 10 minute sea trial as long as the boat is what they say it is, and they will likely change their tune..... BTW if it is REALLY cold, have the stuff with you to re-winterize at the ramp when you pull out..... If it's an outboard, just lower the engine at the ramp and let it drain before it can freeze and ur GTG

You don't seem to be listening to the the people who live in this area. There are no cheap boats here. They will ALL require significant expense, and you won't get your money back as you're fixing up a POS to begin with.

My advice is to raise your budget or lower your expectations for comfortable cruising. You'll be much happier with a new 25hp 4 stroke tiller on a tinny than a worn out 80's POS [insert brand here].

I was in your "boat" a year or so ago and looked at all that junk out there that looked good on the ad but in person was a nightmare. I found a slightly used Lund 16 SSV with a Yamaha 40 tiller pull start. I've been everywhere on that thing with the family. Yes, a windshield and canvas would be nice, but I don't have steering, battery, ignition, wiring, soft spots, transom etc etc to worry about. It costs virtually nothing in maintenance. And my kids are turning into some tough boaters being out in the elements.

I'm not saying there aren't good 80's runabouts out there, but you'd need about $10k for a refurbished one with a Yamaha or Honda on the back.

Otherwise, have fun wasting gas and time looking at the "deals" on Craigslist (rule of thumb: boat sellers selling cheap boats lie).

i think you will find what you are looking for.....it just might take a bit jeff.

if you are really insure about a boat....but want to pull the trigger......we have a iboater in new west (i think its new west...could be delta) called rob j........super...super guy......and he really knows his stuff.

if you really need.....ill call him and if he has time.....he might be able to go look at the candidate for you.

that 19 glasply rvr just posted in seattle would be an excellent boat for the west coast. the 140 mercs were workhorses. its kinda pricy.....but im sire the owner could be hit with a stick to get the price down

generally speaking......an older boat like the tri hull could have deck rot issues......this is no problem for me.....you would have to include repairs in your total price.

the only thing that worries me is that tri hulls are not necessarily a good ocean boat.....they are kinda rough riding......but incredibly stable fishing platforms.
there are quite a few tri's in the coastal waters. so its a personal preference.
