What is the thing on the back of some boats that looks like an extendable square foot

Noob question, but what is it? It looks like it extends. It reminds me of a stabilizer leg on a back hoe. It is mounted above the water line on the stern.

Powerpole, sticks in the bottom to temporarily hold the boat in position. Obviously for shallow water use ... www.power-pole.com/

Sure would be nice if the original poster would at least post a picture of the unidentified object. Would sure make things a lot easier.

Should start a thread where somebody can give clues about a certain item on a boat and then we all have to guess it. No photos please.

My vote is for the power pole as something most resembling a part found on a back hoe. :)

My vote is for the power pole too. Probably on a bass style boat.

Outboard engine? Does it say something like Mercury, Evinrude, Yamaha, or Johnson on it?

My guess is speedometer pitot tube. But are we sure we're talking about the back of a boat?

So what do I win for guessing it right?
