what is the timing

i have a 1980 470 mercruiser and i need to know what the timing is suppose to be set at thanks for all the help

Don,
Wasnt it updated to 4 BDTC for the 470 in the late 80s because of poor gas quality. I know thats what the later manuals have as the timing and i have seen it as an update Technical Bulletin I know Jasper has info on it at this link:http://www.jasperengines.com/pdf/37LMerCruiserIgnitionTB.pdf

Or would you say that it only applies to the later engines.

You are correct, and here is the Merc service bulletin that stated the same thing as the Jasper bulletin.

Just wanted to make sure...you scared me for a moment, I just set the timeing on mine to 4 BDTC the other day!

thanks for all the help i will set her at 4 BTDC and maybe that will help my taking off problem and also a little warm when running

the warm running problem may have to do with the fact that i am on a lake that is like 85 deg.


i just completed my transom and floor rebuild on this boat 1980 caravelle fish and ski and that is the closest lake for me to test and tune on and not very much traffic

i am also going to rebuild the 2 barrel carb it acts like it is flooding when u shut down from crusing to and idle

oh did i mention i am new to the boating world i work on cars for a living but never have messed with a boat
