Hey guys - I was just changing out the head gasket on a 1990’ish Evinrude 8hp motor and when I had it sitting sort of upside down this plastic piece fell out of it from......somewhere?? It’s plastic, has a screw in it similar to like an idle adjustment that doesn’t really do much just jams into the other side. For the life of me I can’t find anywhere in the motor that looks to be missing anything that this little piece would fit on. I haven’t tried to run the motor yet since I don’t have my fuel tank here but I’m just wondering if this maybe isn’t really anything or may be have somehow wound up in there from some other operation?? That sounds strange but I’ve seen some strange things.....

That looks like the cam follower to operate the throttle on the carb. This is what my 9.9 looks like.

Yep, cam follower, OMC used that on several motors I own...using your Model Number look up on exploded view diagrams where that cam follower belongs. It is critical part.

It is held on stud with a micro O-Ring
my local hardware has these
in plumbing washers,O-Rings etc
That little hole in flat arm has little bend rod that attaches to carb throttle arm it’s just flopping loose don’t loose it
Easy repair your O-Ring has
likely dry rotted.

Yes!! Thanks guys - I actually found the metal cam arm arm as well so it all makes sense. I’m missing the bolt but I’ll figure out something. Thanks again!

I don’t suppose aside from stealing off another scrap motor there is a bolt or part number for the one that keeps the cam follower in place? I saw it come out also and have looked for the life of me but am not sure I’m going to find it..........😒

If you look at your model #on the tag then look at parts pictures to get part#
If they don’t have it here google that #Many Evinrude parts dealers will show up it may be available on ebay as many people tear these motors down and part them out.My Evinrude 8HP is a 96 model
Model# tell us the year

Hey Dizz, this little guy is a ‘90. I’ll take a look and see if I can’t find a part number for it if I can’t find the original by moving everything around where I was working. But my local small engine mechanic usually has lots of stuff laying around from 35yrs of business so he likely has a small hp OMC laying around somewhere from this vintage as well especially if that bolt fits a number of models. I just recall it’s very specific it has the thicker “neck” where the cam follower rides on

Bonger in my 15 on different years some like mine has plastic stud it rides on
Earlier years used Screw stud that threads into carb top. I bet you find yours but if not that part # easy to find

It's called a shoulder screw. My 1970s 4 hp uses the same one.. So probably used for years on many models.

Thanks guys - haven’t yet had a chance to get back to the lake to take a look for the bolt, but if I don’t find it I’ve got a few guys I can check with for a scrap motor donor or else buy new
