What is this - a loose wire?

Before I start I know I need a manual and I do have one on order. In the meantime I need to tinker. While working on my newly aquired 1955 25 horse evinrude, I found a wire hanging in the engine that wasn't hooked up. I found the only place it would go and tightend it down. I know this was a little scarry but I had a strong feeling that this is correct. Anyway, the engine did start and seemed to run just fine before, but with this wire attached it won't start and there appears to be fuel flooding the carb. Is this some sort of automatic priming that the previous owner was trying to bypass? It has a button for electric start and a button for electric choke. I would appreciate anyones comments on this.<br />Thanks.

Chip<br />That would be pretty good guess....<br />is the wire coming from something that looks like a sylenoid by the carb??

Yes, it does. With the wire attached and starter engaged there appears to be linkage moving in the engine and without it being attached there is nothing but the starter doing it's job. What is strange is that it starts well and runs good only without this wire hooked up. It will not start otherwise. I'm confused?

Just a guess with out seeing it first hand, but I would say it's the primer, and your set up doesn't need it.. thus flooding it when you connect it... maybe the previous owner modified something else you are not aware of to by pass the primer...

sounds like you have a bad electric choke switch. w/ the choke solenoid engaged your engine isnt gettin any air (you know that) If you have a multimeter, check for continuity in the switch, place the neg pin on a good ground, and the pos. pin on the side of the switch that isnt gettin 12v. if you read 12v w/out activating the switch, you should try replacing the choke switch with a momentary on/off switch

A 1955 motor shouldn't have a choke solenoid unless someone retro fitted one on it.

The wire you connected was probably the kill wire and all the fuel you're seeing is because the engine is flooded because there's no spark.<br /><br />c/6<br /><br />Hooty
