maybe it's super obvious, but I've never seen them in this pond. Was out looking to get catfish, the pond had been filled up about a foot and a half higher, and this guy came up. I've fished there a number of times and blue gill and catfish were everywhere. Never got one of these until this morning. What is it?

Yeah, looks like a gold fish to me too... some of those things get huge.

What bait did it bite, a live worm?

SSU's back pond. Usually we get a ton of small catfish there and an occasional bluegill, but they just filled it up another foot and a half and we only caught a few. Nothing on the fly either. It's been a nice little place to take kids because before today, the we had a 12 inch cat on every 4-5 minutes tops.

LOL, Ken is a good guy! Glad I met him. Going for his doctorate. Hope some day I can take a trip up to Toronto and do some fishing in his neck of the woods.

I'm w fishr-D, a juvinile carp that will one day be 30+ pounds. The large scales give it away.

Re: what is this fish?

Someone must have stuck it/them in there when they filled the water back up this week because we've been fishing it all summer and have only seen 10-14 inch catfish, 1 bass, and a few 7-8 inch bluegill. Not sure why. I thought carp were just a pain in general. Would someone have that in a fish tank? maybe dumbed it in there?

Re: what is this fish?

It's rare to catch native Common Carp with catfish baits, they seem to like bugs, larvae, fish eggs, etc. and you can catch a boatload w a few pieces of canned corn on a hook on the bottom if there are good numbers in the pond. I did catch a 34 lbr. on a trailer hook attached to a Rattletrap years ago while Bass fishing in the spring and it was hooked right in the mouth. I wonder if it was guarding its bed, the lure was falling, seconds after hitting the water when I hooked it. It was big and ugly and missing alot of the scales on it's body. The ones that remained were the size of a silver dollar!

lol, that's crazy! Fishing conditions were different than usual that day with the water way up and the fountains off. Not sure why it went for the hotdog, but I got two of them that afternoon. Next time I go back I'll try the corn and see if I get any more.

Re: what is this fish?

We are getting a lot of different types of carp in northern Illinois. I don't know where they are coming from but we now have a bighead carp and the asian carp that they are trying to keep out of the Great Lakes. I have read that the quality of the game fish go down as the number of rough fish increase in a lake or pond. So I tried to catch some of the carp out of one of the local fishing holes. Harder to catch than I thought.

Re: what is this fish?

You'd be surprised at some of the lengths carp fishermen go through to catch their quarry.

Specialized tackle and closely guarded secret chum and bait recipes, they make an art out of it.

If you want to catch Carp you have to prepare the area in advance, chumming is the secret to success. You can chum an area with canned corn for a few days before, thowing a can out each day in the same spot. Throw it out by hand so it scatters. After baiting the area for a few days use canned corn for bait and you will hook some. Whether or not you land them depends on your choice of tackle, most Carp fishermen use tackle similar to surf casting rods and reels to land the large fish. Fishing from shore works better than fishing from a boat for Carp.

NGT, sorry to hijack this but this is important stuff and figured you'd check here before anywhere else.

I was down talking to Josh at noon, yes, I was getting more tackle but... he say's Sonoma is hot and so is Berryessa. I'm going to Sonoma in the morning and will be back around noon. Be at my house at 5:00am if you want to go. If you miss me, try the lake, I usually don't get on the water until about 6:00am. I'm taking "Pole Dancer" and drving the Diesel. Berryessa next weekend if you want to plan ahead.

That looks alot like ngts fish but the scales and the mouth are different if you look closely. I see a small barbel in ngts pik, also indicative of a Carp. That Carp will look much differently than now when its larger. Probably orangish or yellow depending on the water clarity and a bigger head along w some thick mass.

Re: what is this fish?

I agree, I'm pretty sure it's a tui-chub. They plant them around here to produce bait fish for Trout, Salmon and Steelhead (land locked). Bass don't usually go for the juveniles (the one in the picture is at least a year old and not food anymore). Maybe someone is trying to get bass started in the pond.

I'm gonna take a ride over there some evening and see what's going on. Might be a nice place to work on my fly throwing skills. They need it bad.
