Re: WHAT is this leg

Without knowing exactly what the "one up the road" has, I wouldn't bet on everything being exact. It's the little details that can throw a wrench into the works.
Why are you replacing the gimbal ring and gimbal housing?

there is lots of play in the gimbal ring where it mounts to the housing... I can lift the leg up and move it from side to side can see that at the top of the gimbal ring to the housing that it is very sloppy and I have water leaking into the boat from a housing seal that has failed

If you have water coming in around where the gimbal housing seals against the transom, they you have about a 99.9% chance that the wood in the transom is rotten. Those 6 studs with Nyloc nuts do not just come loose.

Don S is probably right. Before you order parts I would pull everything off and check it out. You will need to pull it off anyway to replace parts if the transom is ok. That way if the transom is bad you can decide what you want to do before sinking money into parts.

Re: WHAT is this leg

ok I took the leg and gimbal ring off today and found a small tear in U joint bellows thank good the gimbal bearing is in good shape still and my play in steering is do to top shaft being a splined shaft into splined gimbal ring so I need to replace this as I had to drill out the allen key that goes threw top steering shaft it broke half way . so do they make a replacement gimbal ring and steering shaft that isn,t splined to fit in my housing
