This donut looking bushing broke off on my starter causing the starting wheel to spin higher than the flywheel. It shows up on the parts diagram but not listed??? It is located below the lock nut #2 and wraps around the spring above the gear looking wheel.

looks to me like you'll need to order part #1 as a whole assembly.

You mean I have to buy the whole part? It's around $55. The gear works, just that tube bushing needs to be replaced. Could I find this part at an auto place?

You've got to be kidding me! The whole NEW part and assembly cost $55 bucks and you want to "rig" something on your motor?!?!?!?!... You MUST remember that when a car breaks down, you get out and walk. When a boat breaks down, you're screwed!

the starter works. The gear rotates. The piece that broke off looked like a one inch tube. When I looked at other pictures of starters they don't have it. Now that this piece broke off, my starter looks like normal starters. Problem is when I try to start the motor the gear rotates up and when it hits the stop nut its already higher than the flywheel.

The problem with hunting down parts like that is it often takes $55 worth of time askin around and standing in line. I don't think it would hurt anything to try something, might wanna rig a pull start rope just in case....Stay away from the soft metals.

Well I guess that you can always swim back to shore. If it is one thing that I have learned in the few decades that I have had on this earth so far it is that the smaller and seemingly insignifigant something looks the more expensive it is to buy.

Re: What is this part called?

I fixed it. a new bendix wouldn't have solved it. I moved the bushing and spring above the washer that was located below the lock nut and screwed the lock nut down farther on the shaft. It was an odd design why they would make the lock nut so far above the flywheel and put on a stopper mechanism? I called a salvage place and he was very aware of my type of starter, but good luck on finding that one piece. He said that was that longer shaft starter. Couldn't tell me why either. Anybody have an answer?

probably use the starter motor on several different hp motors.
