what is this part?

There is a plate mounted just above the drain hole. Looks to be a transom protector?? It does not have any wear marks on it.

Boat it's on is a 70's Larson All American. Motor is an Evinrude 135. New boat is a Hurricane 84 deck boat.

I don't want any more holes in the transom than necessary. I am looking to see if I should be moving this plate to the "new" boat for this motor.

Thanks for any input.

It is a zinc anode, supposed to prevent corrosion. Yours looks like it has seen better days and should be replaced anyway. Personally, I never thought they did much good.

There are anodes that go right on the motor now.

F R Thanks for the reply, I have heard, (or read) just a few comments on these. I had never seen a picture.

I know the boat it is on has seen better days, one for the scrap yard.

My 2nd on the zinc anode but I don't see what it's good for, just bolted on the back of a fiberglass boat? Anodes are usually on motors or hulls of metal boats to help control galvanic corrosion, especially in saltwater boats or boats that are left in the water. Good Luck!

Maybe it was one of those Factory options that was sold to the original owner. A salesman earning his keep.

I don't think the water in Michigan qualifies as Salt or even Brackish.

Hey, maybe the transom on the boat went bad because that anode was installed:rolleyes:

That's a transom mounted anode - looks to be oem OMC. The mounting bolts should go thru the transom and be wired electrically to the motor.

Its intended primarily for older outboards that didn't come with one, or there are no engine mounted parts available.

Re: what is this part?

Is it safe to assume that I don't have to worry about remounting or getting a new anode if my boat sits on a trailer when not in use.

Or should I be looking to get a new one for the new boat?

I wouldn't put it back on if the boat is only used occasionally in fresh water. If you go to salt water, or on vacation for a few weeks, just tilt the motor up when not in use.

Like mentioned before, they are normally on metallic vessels or on the motor/outdrive. mostly on boats that are left in the water and are connected to dock (A/C) power. also on vessels not connected to dock power if left in the water near other vessels that are connected to dock power.
