thanks for the quick reply. it flips up and down, when should it be up and when should it be down?

When it breaks.... you will go to a boating store and ask for a pitot (the proper word) ;)

...and pronounced "pee-toe" :)

The water pressure against the end of the tube similarly puts pressure on the air inside the tube running up to your speedometer which is calibrated to show a particular reading, given at a particular pressure.

They are notoriously innaccurate at slower speeds.

Mine is fairly accurate when compared to GPS, however it does not kick in till 15 to 20 MPH.

Also, when the hose comes off the back of the speedometer it shoots water right in your lap. Don't ask me how I know this...
