I believe it was the name Johnson used when it was refering to the hydro-electric shift system. Used in 1968 on the 55hp, and 1969 thru 1972 on engines above 40hp.

sorry jimmbo, one step forward, they were the control system after the hydro electric shift. they are basically the controls with the Red cannon plug. i have about 5 of them in parts. with a conversion pigtail, can be used on the new motors.

Re: What is this "powershift II" everyone speaketh of?

From what I have picked up, between this thread, and a couple google searches, is it is an electric mechanical shift, that uses the red plug, like the hydroelectric shift outboards. An elec. mechanical shift doesn't quite make sense to me. Does someone care to elaborate?

Also, having never heard of these before, I assume they are rather sound designs? Generally, it seems that the popular ones, are because they are notorious.

Also, I know that they started in 1973, after ditching the hydroelectric shift motors, but what year did they stop making them?

Thanks a bunch yall.

oops, I stand corrected

Anyway. the unit introduced in 1973 was the Hydro-mechanical. Basically a mechanical shift with an hydrolic assist. Used until about 78, exact year depended on the engine type. The 2 and 3 cylinder loopers were first, soon after the larger engines.
