What is this tube?

Again, I am new to this boating thing and I know it shows. I have a '86 Bayliner Capri with a volvo aq125/270. On the engine, there is a small, about 1" round, black tube that comes up and rests against the carberator housing. There is an indention for this tube there so I know it belongs there, but should it be connected to anything? It looks as if if belongs somewhere, but I don't know. What is it? an auxilary exhaust? ...please help- I am lost in a boating bliss...

It is most likley the tubes from the valve covers to the flame trap on the carburetor, one for each side.

one for each side? There is only one there, and I do think that you are right about it going to the flame trap-- but how does it connect?<br /><br />Thanks!

From the valve cover to the flame arrester. takes the fumes off the oil and burns them in the carb.

There should be a hose to connect the both of them. The purpose of this is that the exhaust/fume that comes out of this hole is pass to the flame arrestor/trap to reburn and does not built up in the engine compartment when the engine is running, safty factor. You can go to the local parts shop and ask for a "L" hose and cut to fit. Measure the hole size and get half a size bigger so that it would fit. Good luck.

Its a 4cyl, only one breather tube from the crankcase. The tube starts from a chamber under no: 3 spark plug(near the dip stick) and connects to the flame arrestor (air filter housing).<br /><br /><br />Aldo

Ok Dunaruna- thank you for clarifying that I should have only one breather tube, I was confused with everybody talking about two. I figured from pictures and stuff that it should be connected to the Flame arrestor, but how does it connect? Adhesive or?? there seems to be no place for it to connect to that filter... mine is just flapping free...thanks again ya'll.

Someone may have changed the flame arrestor, or lost a fitting that attaches to it. I'm not intimate with your engine set up but you should try to get a Seloc manual for your motor. It would show a picture.<br /><br />Even though this is not the same arrestor that you have, it'll give you an idea of what I'm speaking. Ok thank you for the picture, but my flame arrestor has no elbow like that or any other specific place to connect. It does have a "C" shaped cutout of the top of the carberater housing. I place it in there and put a strip of tape on the back to keep it in place. Now the tube is dead ending into the flame arrestor filter on the Carberater. ====IIIIIII , kind of like that if you can imagine. Is this going to be ok? I hate it being free in the engine...Thanks

The indented part you keep refering to is just a top cover for the part your hose should connect to.You should have 2 screws that hold that part on.Mine has safety instructions written on that cover.The indent is where the hose would be.There should be another plate that goes underneath and sits on the flame arrester screen.It fits over to seal the arrester.The holes line up with the top cover and the screws keep them both down.
