Glued and ti-wrapped on to the ignition coil cover on the right hand side of my Mercury 90hp o/b (3 cyl, 1989 model) is a small black component with a blue wire coming out of the top and three wires coming out of the bottom (white black and green). The wires disappear into the ignition area behind the cover. The component is about 4 inches long by 1 inch by 1/2 inch.

The part number 834949A3 is stamped on the side of it. The mercury parts list show it as an "adaptor kit" but it is not shown on my service manual. What is this and why would it have been fitted as it was not part of the original equipment fit for this engine?

If I am right it is the warning system for the motor. Your oil level sensor and overheat sensor works through this unit and it supplies voltage to a warning horn near your control unit when tehre is a problem.
